BT: The Sheila Divine – Hum

If a band could ever lay claim to being criminally overlooked, it’s The Sheila Divine.  Their 1999 album New Parade is a masterpiece.  Angry pop rock at its best, a vocal amalgam of straightforward screaming and a light falsetto.  Infectious, timeless, and will grow on your with each successive listen.

A certain label, whose name I won’t mention (but they always escaped the coyote) really dropped the ball with The Sheila Divine.  Inexcusable, and one reason bitterness marinates in my soul when I think of certain aspects of the music business.

New Parade goes much deeper than “Hum” but it’s a good introduction.  Growing up, both as a fan and someone with a mind for the business, I always thought “Web In Front” by Archers of Loaf was a textbook pop rock song.  Still to this day, I love the lyrics, “You’re not the one who let me down, but thanks for offering.”  But when The Sheila Divine entered my world, the entire New Parade album became my definition of perfect pop rock.

I love this band, and I’d love nothing more than to see another show booked at the Mercury Lounge in the near future.  If you’d like to download New Parade for free, visit our free music page

This is an epic song. I heard it on a sampler when I was in college. I forgot about them for the last decade.
