Interview with Ville Friman of Insomnium
By: Andrew
It’s a little overcast here in New York, so it’s fitting that today I spoke to Ville Friman, co-founder of one of Finland’s most awesome exports, melodic death metal band Insomnium.
Their fifth album, One For Sorrow will be released by Century Media in the United States on October 18th, 2011. Unfortunately, I haven’t heard it. As per the request of the Insomnium’s management, it’s only being released to non-print press on October 11th. So, the only thing I can say is that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed their past work and I’m hopeful that One For Sorrow will follow suit.
The interview runs approximately 20 minutes. Ville Friman holds a PhD in some form of evolutionary ecology. I’m unsure of the exact field, but since I’m trying to get this up as fast as possible, I’m not going to look it up. Plus, it’s not like any of us would have a clue as to what it means anyway. He’s a smart dude, and that’s awesome. I always love hearing about musicians that have pursuits outside of their bands.
- We talked about the jump from Candlelight and the organic progression to their current home, Century Media.
- I asked Ville about his thoughts on Spotify, a movement Century Media publicly opposes.
- Ville talked a bit about One For Sorrow. I’m not a fan of these blanket questions, but being that I wasn’t allowed to listen to the album there wasn’t much I could say. Ville calls it “quite progressive but still in your face.”
- The band expects to return to the United States in early 2012. Ville is unsure if Insomnium is strong enough to headline a run here, but will at the very least be coming as part of a package. Their last visit was in 2007.
- Ville had no idea Candlelight was releasing their first four albums on vinyl. It happened without the knowledge of the band. Obviously, he hopes to receive some free copies.
I’m hoping to see a date in New York City on their itinerary in a few months. You can download or stream the interview here. And you can navigate all that is Insomnium from their Official Site.
