Phil Lipscomb of Taproot Interview!

18 April 2011 40 Comments

By: Andrew

Phil Lipscomb, bass player in the band Taproot

Phil Lipscomb of Taproot was a pretty “chill” guest. That word is not in my vocabulary, but since that is what so many listeners used to describe that broadcast, I’ll go with it. Phil was definitely of our ilk, though. Darius always comes up with pretty impressive words.

We talked a little about Plead The Fifth, their current tour and some past tours. We even talked about Pulse Ultra. And not only that, we talked about Pulse Ultra organically. I was waiting for the conversation to touch on Factory 81, but it didn’t quite go there.

Taproot are warriors and have arguably released their best album to date. They’re one of the best live bands on the touring circuit. Whereas most bands merely perform their songs in a live setting, Taproot brings their catalog to life.

We got started a little late due to a miscommunication on their end, and worked through some typical guest cell phone issues, but still it was an enjoyable show. The show was cut in various places, but the flow is still preserved.

Grab a friend or two. Or grab your girlfriend. Or heck, grab yourself and get out to a Taproot live show. They’re All Knowing Force approved.

Our thanks go out to Mr. Phil Lipscomb of Taproot, and one half of the two most handsome men on the internet, Darius, for getting this together. By the way, I’m the other handsome man.

I couldn’t access the live broadcast. It said the link was invalid and then it said the room was at “peak.”

What does this mean and why wasn’t I able to listen?

I never liked Taproot but I’ll give this new one a shot. Phil seems likable. We’ll see what happens. Sings with that nasal whine never did it for me tho.

Thank you very much to all those who tuned in tonight for our live broadcast. I apologize to all those who were shut out from the stream. Along with the new site design, we’re also going to be upgrading and expanding our live streaming capabilities. No one will be getting shut out once all the methods are implemented.

Phil Lipscomb was an awesome guest. We apologize for getting started late. It was out of our control.

A write-up and the audio will be up tomorrow.

I’m up in Albany and Andrew is right. They don’t play Taproot up here with the exception of Poem at 4am. It’s true about 103.9 playing Puddle Of Mud and then Nirvana and then Soundgarden and the cycle constantly repeating. Theres so much FRESH music out there to be played. If I knew how I’d remove my FM radio too dudes.

I dig Fractured. I’m going to go back thru the catalog again, give them another shot.

Can the new buffer for live shows be 15 minutes late at the worstt?

    I can **FINALLY** comment! \m/

Plead The Fifth isn’t heavy for the sake of being heavy. The guys didn’t enter the studio with that mindset and when Phil said that I’m sure he was being truthful. At my age I know heavy for the sake of being heavy and the end result is never something as good as Plead The Fifth.

He was saying something about Darius bitching because the show started a little late. I was confused because the show started on time for me. I don’t think the guest came on until later but the show started on time.

I’m clueless as to what happened with that too.

That rant at the beginning was priceless. It was so misguided and misdirected and spoken by a true fan.

    Off to bed.

There is a reason we don’t hear Fractured on the radio. Because Nickelback’s version of it is on 24-7.

PLEASE INCLUDE THAT KNICKS RANT. I got in the stream but missed it when I had to take a call. That was so on point. It didn’t make sense, but it was on point.

They lost me after Blue Sky Research. I’ll check out Plead The Fifth on Rhapsody.

I didn’t even know they were touring with Cold.

How do these tours happen when no one knows about them? Or that the bands are still in existence?

    Chronicles of Israfel are alright.

That is a stupid band name, right up there with IWRESTLEDABEARONCE.

Why choose a name no one can spell? It’s not even a cool name. Why not just called your band Jerry or something like that?

I’m really liking the new design. Been waitin’ a while on it. Like some of the others above I didn’t know they were still around. I guess there like one of those bands ignored by radio and can’t see the reason why. This Fracture song is super radio friendly.

The QOTSA review was great. Can’t wait to see them soon hopefully!

I saw Taproot and Cold on that tour. I definitely enjoyed the show, although I am more than a little disappointed that Taproot didn’t close. Cold is a good rock band with a decent following (probably why they were headliners). Either way, Taproot brings more energy, better musicianship, and just a flat-out more entertaining show. Croc Rock is a cool, intimate venue, and I’ve enjoyed every show I’ve seen there. The only reason I didn’t rate 5 out of 5 is because Taproot > Cold =).

@ everyone who has asked (the Reply feature will be working again shortly, by the way) …

There was a miscommunication on Taproot’s end which led to Phil joining the show late. Darius was trying to straighten that out while I was entertaining (used very loosely) you all.

    — The contest details will be revealed shortly.

    — The band so many of you asked about in the first few comments is Kill Cheerleader. The song is called “Lady Of The Night.” All Hail is an amazing album. It’s unfortunate that drug problems and incarceration led to their demise. Nikki Sixx and Lemmy were supporters, touting them in multiple publications.

Thank you to all that listened.

Taproots first 3 albums were pretty phenomenal but when “Our Long Road Home” came out I wanted to scream. It sounded like something emo like “My chemical Romance” or something. I liked the first song on that album but the rest I didn’t care for too much. “Plead The Fifth” is a step in the right direction, but still I feel falls short of the greatness of their first few albums. I think maybe they have been caught up in the whole music biz bullshit and have lost sight of who they are.
