“What’s going on guys? You can talk to us, we’re right here.†– Stephen Richards, Taproot
Last night’s Taproot show at the Key Club in West Hollywood was an intimate affair that brought the Ann Arbor, Michigan band up close and personal to a small, yet completely appreciative audience. Lead singer Stephen Richards bantered with audience members throughout the show and even got them involved in a few songs.
It was a small turnout, between 200-250 people, but that didn’t deter Taproot one bit. After all, it was a Wednesday night in a city that has hundreds of entertainment options 7 nights a week. But I don’t think any of it matters; they were there to put on an honest, uncompromising rock show and Taproot accomplished just that.
They hit the stage and rocked every bit as hard as when I last saw them, 10 years ago at Ozzfest, where they played in front of thousands of people. They opened with “Smile,†the lead track off the band’s debut album, Gift, and closed with “Poem,†their highest charting single to date.
In between, I heard every song I wanted, including “Now Rise,†“Again & Again,†“Mine,†and “I.†Throughout the set, Stephen Richards talked to audience members, shook hands, and offered the occasional humorous quip (“You all have a good Easter? Yeah that’s right; Easter sucks unless you’re 4!â€) that kept things entertaining throughout.
Taproot has a ton of talent; I can’t believe I’ve been out of the loop this long. Recent guest Phil Lipscomb is an extremely talented bassist; his bass lines actually carry a lot of the songs, instead of just simply accompany them. Guitarist Mike DeWolf is terrific and is all over the stage. Tons of energy. Stephen Richards sounded great too; I was very impressed with him as a frontman. It’s not every night you have someone so engaging with the audience; making them feel like they are actually a part of the show.
Go see Taproot. There are tons of dates left on this tour so find out where they’re playing near you and check them out. I had a blast and I fully expect you will as well.
