Nonpoint Concert Review – 11/12/10 – Whisky A Go-Go – West Hollywood, CA

Nonpoint is currently on tour with In This Moment and are playing tons of markets across the nation. In between a pair of California dates, the band played a headlining set at the Whisky A Go-Go and I was there to see one of my favorite bands do what they do best.

– I’ve seen Nonpoint multiple times and have never been disappointed. They’re a really great live band and always have been. The last time I saw them out here was opening for Cold at the Roxy just up the street and the crowd was awesome and were much more into Nonpoint than the headliner. As a matter of fact, it appeared that dozens of people had actually left after their set, as the place was noticeably less full.

– With that being said, I was excited to see them do a headlining set in LA and see how the audience would react. The result: I couldn’t have been more pleased as they went ballistic from beginning to end.

– The staff really had their hands full: the Whisky is a small place and the floor stretches out from the stage all the way to the back of the bar; there isn’t a lot of protection from the mosh pit for the more casual observer standing in the back. The pit was so crazy at this show that security had to go in and calm people down. Awesome.

– Ken Macmillan, Nonpoint’s larger-than-life bass player has taken a greater role on stage as he is now handling backing vocals. That was a surprise to see. “Shadow” has some significant backing vocals and he nailed it.

Nonpoint's audience at the Whisky

– Elias sounded amazing. He sounded even better than the last time I saw the band during the Cold tour. The man has some pipes and I’ll bet it’s tough to sound that good while touring for weeks on end, but he is clearly in tip-top shape for this current tour.

– Nonpoint brought out Puya’s guitar player for the Rabia > Orgullo portion of the set. This is what the band calls “Spanish 101”, as the lyrics for both songs are entirely Spanish. Given their heritage, it’s an appropriate staple of any live Nonpoint set.

– The great Evan Seinfeld from Biohazard made an appearance to help Elias sing the Pantera classic “5 Minutes Alone.” Wow. First of all, I hardly recognized him because he has lost so much weight. Seriously, he has to be at his absolute thinnest. He looked great but I hope whatever fitness regimen is all maintenance at this point; any thinner and Seinfeld is just skin and bones. Regardless, it was so cool to see him up there with Elias belting this classic tune.

– I’m really getting used to seeing Zach Broderick as Nonpoint’s axe man. It helps that he’s a sick guitar player.

– Go see Nonpoint during this tour. They never disappoint on stage and you will walk away a happy person. As a pretty incredible bonus, you’ll get to see In This Moment as well, so you can’t lose. In This Moment’s Maria Brink is beautiful and the band’s latest record is their best. Nonpoint and In This Moment is such a great package and I hope they’ll consider touring together again in the future, because I would have loved to see them both.

– Nonpoint is currently on tour supporting their latest release, titled Miracle. I love the record and am pumped to see these guys on the road destroying their set after all of these years. Where so many of their peers failed or disappeared, Nonpoint persevered.

You sold me. I just bought my tickets to see them in Hartford with In This Moment.

Their songwriting sucks but live we’ll see if they kill in 2 weeks.
