A Long Drive Home with Joe Altier (ex-Brand New Sin)

Just Joe Altier

Joe Altier is a Syracuse-based musician best known from his days fronting the rock band Brand New Sin. It’s been over three years since his last appearance on our air.

Brand New Sin logged tens of thousands of miles touring the United States over three albums, as well as a support tour in Europe. In 2007, Joe told a story on our show about how Brand New Sin and their excessive drinking was deemed a bad influence on Zakk Wylde. So, after hearing that, you’d think now, in 2011, I’d be talking to a trainwreck – a destitute alcoholic/addict, desperately trying to reclaim even the slightest glimpse of past glory (eh hem, Steven Adler).

Not so. Armed with an amazing rock n’ roll voice, Joe is paying the bills as Just Joe, which is just Joe and a piano. He does covers and has an album of original material out as well titled My Demons, My Burden, My Life. It’s refreshing to chat with someone that keeps it real – someone that went through so much adversity, defeated his demons and is now making a living at something he loves (and finally getting paid).

This conversation (in no way was this an interview) was recorded at 1am, which is by far the latest we’ve ever recorded anything. I flew solo, as Darius was out being bored to tears at Scott Weiland. Due to the very rock n’ roll nature of the spot, I decided to upload the audio as is, without cleaning it up or making adjustments.

We talked about Brand New Sin, his current musical projects, Metallica, Peter Steele, and much more. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone more passionate about music than Joe Altier. The guy absolutely lives for music, and I respect the heck out of him for it.

You can visit Joe at his official site located at justjoe.com. Also, Google Elephant Mountain. He fronts that band as well.

This show is 2 hours. You can stream it (left click) or download it (right click, save as) on our site here.

    Brand New Sin was sick.

I didn’t listen to the show yet but I hope you mentioned to Joe that the video for My World should be abolished from the world. The angry faces he makes drive me insane.

All their albums are killer. I don’t quite fathom thi Just Joe crap I Googled though. Typical bar fare.

I can’t recall the first time I saw this band but thought they looked like a bunch of welders or something. They were great live.

I’ll listen to the audio when I get a chance.

Stoked to hear this guy is doing well.

    Surprisingly entertaining.

This is par for the course with AKF though. The guy is promoting new material and you focus on his old band. Pretty crappy of you guys.

If I would have seen the Just Joe stuff which I checked out AFTER, I wouldn’t have cared about this.

That was a pretty cool conversation. I have my opinions as to why nothing of Just Joe was posted but I’ll wait to see what Andrew writes about it to be sure.

I went and checked out his Just Joe stuff and it’s not for me. If I didn’t listen to the 3 Youtube’s in this article I wouldn’t have listened to the show. Long audio but time well spent.

I was researching Brand New Sin (what happened to them etc) and came across this audio. This dude was a drunken mess on tour. So cool he got his act together and cleaned his life up. He appears down to earth in this interview and I’m glad he’s still doing something he loves and this time getting paid.
