A Long Drive Home with Joe Altier (ex-Brand New Sin)
By: Andrew Bilach
Joe Altier is a Syracuse-based musician best known from his days fronting the rock band Brand New Sin. It’s been over three years since his last appearance on our air.
Brand New Sin logged tens of thousands of miles touring the United States over three albums, as well as a support tour in Europe. In 2007, Joe told a story on our show about how Brand New Sin and their excessive drinking was deemed a bad influence on Zakk Wylde. So, after hearing that, you’d think now, in 2011, I’d be talking to a trainwreck – a destitute alcoholic/addict, desperately trying to reclaim even the slightest glimpse of past glory (eh hem, Steven Adler).
Not so. Armed with an amazing rock n’ roll voice, Joe is paying the bills as Just Joe, which is just Joe and a piano. He does covers and has an album of original material out as well titled My Demons, My Burden, My Life. It’s refreshing to chat with someone that keeps it real – someone that went through so much adversity, defeated his demons and is now making a living at something he loves (and finally getting paid).
This conversation (in no way was this an interview) was recorded at 1am, which is by far the latest we’ve ever recorded anything. I flew solo, as Darius was out being bored to tears at Scott Weiland. Due to the very rock n’ roll nature of the spot, I decided to upload the audio as is, without cleaning it up or making adjustments.
We talked about Brand New Sin, his current musical projects, Metallica, Peter Steele, and much more. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone more passionate about music than Joe Altier. The guy absolutely lives for music, and I respect the heck out of him for it.
You can visit Joe at his official site located at justjoe.com. Also, Google Elephant Mountain. He fronts that band as well.
