The Meat Puppets

This conversation was prerecorded. I posted about it prior to uploading the audio. A listener who comments frequently sent me an email and said…

“Meat Puppets. Stepping outside ur comfort zone their boys.”

First, a little lesson to everyone who wants to be taken seriously. And, the listener who wrote this I do take seriously, as I know he’s a smart guy and wise to the business. But, use “your” NOT “ur.” It’s “there” NOT “their.”

Comfort zone? I’ve said time and time again that I listen to all genres of music. Years ago many of you ragged on me because I admitted to liking Enya. And then it was the Goo Goo Dolls. Please, grow up. In the past week, I’ve been listening to the Small Faces, Replacements, Grant Lee Buffalo and the list goes on and on. Add Meat Puppets to that list as well. Oh, Chimaira and Unearth too. My palate is diverse. Variety truly is the spice of life.

Anyway, this interview was a little difficult. They switched the band member we were speaking to at the last moment. Plus, we conducted it in the middle of the day with poor cell phone reception. Cris Kirkwood is the kind of guy you could listen to talk for hours. This guy has been on a journey, professionally and personally. From drugs, to success with his band, to jail, and back again, Cris has lived life for the journey.

This interview isn’t for everyone. It wasn’t our best. But, I will say this…Darius loves them, and I appreciate them. Their catalog is pretty awesome, and as a 31 year old guy writing this, it’s awesome. Please, do us a favor and at the very least, investigate this band. They deserve your mind and ears.

You can download the 20 minute audio (right click, save as) or stream it here.

Their latest record, Lollipop, is available now.

I’m a bit shocked this band still has fans. I hadn’t heard a thing they did since 1995.

Our smart followers seem to have left the building. During the conversation, I purposely referred to Seven Mary Three as one of their contemporaries. I was expecting to get verbally executed, but no one seemed to catch it. Either that or our listeners don’t care about the Meat Puppets. Or, maybe they don’t care about me.
