The Avett Brothers

I would never have thought – ever – in a million years – that when I started All Knowing Force we’d be covering a band like The Avett Brothers. They’re a folk rock band for crying out loud. You may or may not be in to this genre, but it’s been many years since I’ve heard such amazing songwriting.

As per their MySpace page…

“If you put your ear to the street, you can hear the rumble of the world in motion; people going to and from work, to school, to the grocery store. You may even hear the whisper of their living rooms, their conversation, their complaints, and if you’re lucky, their laughter. If you’re almost anywhere in America , you’ll hear something different, something special, something you recognize but haven’t heard in a long time. It is the sound of a real celebration. It is not New Year’s, and it is not a political convention. It is neither a prime time game-show, nor a music video countdown, bloated with fame and sponsorship. What you are hearing is the love for a music. It is the unbridled outcry of support for a song that sings to the heart, that dances with the soul. The jubilation is in the theaters, the bars, the music clubs, the festivals. The love is for a band. The songs are honest: just chords with real voices singing real melodies. But, the heart and the energy with which they are sung, is really why people are talking, and why so many sing along. They are a reality in a world of entertainment built with smoke and mirrors, and when they play, the common man can break the mirrors and blow the smoke away, so that all that’s left behind is the unwavering beauty of the songs. That’s the commotion, that’s the celebration, and wherever The Avett Brothers are tonight, that’s what you’ll find.”

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been listening to all their records and to say I’m moved is an understatement. You simply don’t hear songwriting like this any more and I urge all of you, each and every last one of you, to give these guys a listen. Click here to stream Avett Brothers music for free.

I wonder if we can get them on the show*. I’d love to learn more about them. They play The Fillmore at Irving Plaza this Friday and Saturday, June 12th and 13th. You can get tickets at Live Nation or at the box office.

*Note: 6/9/09 – We were just contacted by Dani Lovett at Sony BMG that the band is currently swamped and unavailable for interviews in the next few days.

I’m not a folk rock guy and only swings towards the outlaw country but I can’t deny the songwriting. There were rumblings about the Avetts for years now and getting on Columbia might be the worst thing for them. They’ll be destroyed just like Atlantic murdered Shadows Fall. Kudos to AKF for trying something new and not being ashamed to promoted all types of music.

I was dragged to one of their shows in NC last year and all I can say is if they’re in your town and you have the cash to spare…go catch these guys live. It’s a religious experience. I hope you can get them on the show because I’d like to learn a little more about them.

My girlfriend loves these guys and dragged me to PHILLY to see them last time because she couldn’t make the NY show. It’s “odd” to see AKF writing about them. Are you going soft on us or just trying to get the female demographic numbers up?

I’m trying to picture what mAAT is going to write in response to this post!

Sony BMG will not grant AKF an interview. You’d ask the band questions that they haven’t answered 5600000 times. The corporate cunts hate that because they can’t control everything.

Maybe its just me, or maybe its just the three songs I listened too, but the song writing is not as great as you make it sound, the actual band is terrible (I could play guitar better, and I don’t play guitar) and the guy can’t sing. I’m not saying you’re wrong… oh wait…
